The Comfiest Underwear!

I’m done with store bought undies! I’ve bought the same brand for more than a decade and they seem to have changed both the fabric they use and their fit/cut. I’ve made a few pairs of undies in my time and have taught a few classes on it as well. The undies I’ve made have always been my favorite! So, I think it’s finally time to stop buying underwear and totally commit to making my own!

I’ve mostly used Sophie Hines’ Arccos Undies pattern, which I like a lot. However, I really love the fit of my store-bought undies the best. So time to make my own pattern! After tracing my favorite pair to get the gist of a pattern, I did a quick mock-up to test.

I used some scraps to put this baby together. I didn’t bother with elastic on the leg openings or waist, I really just wanted to get a quick sense of how it fit. From this I found that the crotch width was too wide and that I needed a little more height at the center back. I made the proper alterations to my pattern and cut another set out. This one I finished completely (I figured they would at least fit pretty well and be useable) and from there can continue to edit until they are perfect!

Now, these are by no means perfect - I sort of put them together really quickly - normally, I would probably go back and fix the waist elastic (it’s a bit wiggly). But for mock-up #2, these are fine! I found that the waist elastic needed to be taken in by a couple inches (this way it’ll lay smoother too - when waist elastic is too big things just don’t sit flat - just like when you’re putting a neckband onto a t-shirt!). The leg opening elastic was perfect though! The crotch was still a bit too wide, so I narrowed that up and also tidied up the center back of the pattern a bit too - I didn’t like how it came to a weird peak.

I think with these little adjustments the next rendition will be great! I haven’t had a chance to make a new set yet, so to be continued!
