Beginning Fashion Draping (Draping 101), April 3, 10, 17, and May 1st, 6pm - 8:30pm
In this class we will learn the basics of draping, which is a process of positioning, pinning, and marking fabric on a dress form in order to develop a garments structure and pattern. Following a sketch or design concept, a draper will experiment with the way fabric falls on the form in order to conceptualize and create a garment. Draping is an alternative method to flat patterning techniques, though they are most often used in conjunction, rather than exclusively.
We will learn how to tape the form to create style lines and prep the form, prep the muslin, talk about fabric grain and how it affects the drape. We will drape several types of bodices and skirts. Students will leave with a good beginning understanding of draping.
If you are interested n learning more and continuing practice, I recommend the book: “Draping for Fashion Design” by Hide Jaffe and Nurie Relis.
This class will be four sessions long, each 2.5hrs in length.
Class runs April 3rd, 10th, 17th, and May 1st from 6pm - 8:30pm.
This class has a very limited number of spots (4 in total) so please make sure to sign up in advance and if you need to cancel, please see the cancellation policies and please do so as early as possible so that we can fill your spot.
Students will need 6 yards of cotton muslin fabric. The easiest thing is to order it from Joanns - there is often a sale or coupon to use. This fabric is meant for cutting up and drawing on, so you can also use old sheets (as long as they are lightweight cotton and a light, solid color). Please email sophie@littlebirdsewing.com with any questions or concerns. The width doesn’t really matter - just get whatever makes sense for you and your budget! :) You can also check out The Makery in Burlington - they have second hand craft supplies and may have some chunks of fabric that you could use too! Plain, light-colored fabric is the most ideal as it is helpful to be able to see through it to the form underneath.
**You will notice that there are two options for class payment! One adds a $5 donation to the Sewing Scholarship Fund! This is optional, but much appreciated - The $5 goes towards supporting a student this summer in summer camp and is a program that is launching this year! Thank you for your support!
Things happen and sometimes a cancellation is unavoidable. Please contact Sophie as soon as you know you need to cancel so that plans can be made to reschedule. For pre-paid workshops, cancellations are only accepted up to a week before the scheduled workshop and you will be refunded in full. Any later than that and only 50% will be refunded with the remainder going towards class costs (time and supplies), unless we are able to fill your spot with someone else. Please don’t come to class sick - we will work with you to reschedule! Thanks so much!
