Let’s learn to darn!

Learn the art of darning, a simple type of woven mending traditionally used to repair knit clothing like socks and sweaters. We’ll learn how to darn in different shapes and color patterns, creating a darning sampler and then mending a sock. This class teaches the basics of darning that can be used to mend your own knitted items like socks, gloves, hats, sweaters, and more!

This is a hand-sewing craft and all levels are welcome! Ages 9yrs - 13yrs, some exceptions with teacher permission. Please email sophie@littlebirdsewing.com with any questions or concerns!

This class is being taught by guest instructor, Marie Lallier. Marie is a self-taught lifelong hand stitcher who mended and patched for friends and family. Inspired by the work of artists Celia Pym and Hikaru Noguchi, Marie expanded her skills to include traditional, Scotch, and Swiss darning and other techniques, and now teaching mending basics to others. Hand stitching is slow, which allows space for contemplation and joy in a demanding and noisy world. Marie is also very pleased and honored to be the lead teacher for the Champlain Community Services partnership with Shelburne Craft School.

Materials: 

Students can bring in a sock or other knit item that needs repair 

All other materials included in the class fee

Things happen and sometimes a cancellation is unavoidable. Please contact Sophie as soon as you know you need to cancel so that plans can be made to reschedule. For pre-paid workshops, cancellations are only accepted up to a week before the scheduled workshop and you will be refunded in full. Any later than that and only 50% will be refunded with the remainder going towards class costs (time and supplies), unless we are able to fill your spot with someone else.
